Bristol Rovers 1 Peterborough United 2
Attendance: 9,839 (447 away)
A late Tom Nichols goal denies Rovers a draw at the Memorial Ground.
Darrell Clarke made three changes to the side the defeated Oldham Athletic last weekend, with the trio of Ollie Clarke, Daniel Leadbitter and Jake Clarke-Salter being introduced to the starting line-up for the visit of Peterborough United.
Rovers stood firm to deny Peterborough an opportunity on goal in the opening exchanges when a dangerous set-piece was played into the Rovers area but the delivery was headed well wide by Ryan Tafazolli at the far-post.
Rovers were able to create their first chance of the game when a neat combination of play down the right allowed Stuart Sinclair the space to fire a dangerous pass into the six-yard area that was lifted over the crossbar by a first-time Daniel Leadbitter volley.
A nice piece of individual skill on the edge of the area by Rory Gaffney allowed the forward the opportunity to strike a volley goalwards, but off-balance Gaffney couldn''t keep his effort on target, after doing well to create the opportunity for himself after the ball found him at an awkward height.
Peterborough registered their first shot on target when a long-range effort from Tom Nichols was well watched by Kelle Roos, who was able to smother the ball on the ground to prevent any danger.
Just before the half-hour mark, a clinical pass by Charlie Colkett found Rory Gaffney inside the area and the striker was able to pick out the advancing Stuart Sinclair who took a touch before cutting inside and firing a shot that rose narrowly over the crossbar.
Rovers looked to push forward to grab a goal before the break and almost took the lead when a powerful volley from Chris Lines was pushed away by ''keeper Luke McGee only for the rebound to fall to Matty Taylor who applied a finish from close range but his shot was deflected behind for a corner.
After the break, a well-worked Rovers move down the right-wing, which was started by the combination of Charlie Colkett and Daniel Leadbitter, resulted in a scramble inside the Peterborough area with the ball eventually falling to Matty Taylor who was unable to connect with his shot at the far post.
Rovers were awarded a penalty when a menacing run by Daniel Leadbitter into the area was brought to an abrupt end due to a foul by Shaquile Coulthirst. Matty Taylor was able to keep his composure in the lengthy delay before he was able to take the resulting penalty and the striker managed to slot the ball home after sending ''keeper McGee the wrong way.
The lead for Rovers only lasted four minutes, when a cross into in the area casued a goalmouth scramble after Kelle Roos was tempted off his line and Shaquile Coulthirst was in the right place to redeem himself for his earlier mistake and was able to poke the ball home.
Rovers responded well to the conceding the equaliser, when a flicked pass by Rory Gaffney found Tom Lockyer in an advanced position and the defender was able to get an effort away towards goal that had to be cleared off the line by the Peterborough defence.
Rovers introduced Ellis Harrison and Jermaine Easter from the bench in search of finding a winner and inside the final ten minutes Chris Lines did well to break from midfield and find Matty Taylor inside the box. The striker took one touch and fired a low left-footed volley that bounced narrowly past the far-post.
In stoppage time Peterborough were able to grab a late winner when a ball squared into the area found Tom Nichols who was able to slot the ball home to give Peterborugh a late winner.
Next up for Rovers the visit of Fleetwood Town to the Mem on Tuesday night.
