City started the season like a Ferrari scoring 33 goals in 11 Premiership and Champions League games, with a record of 10 wins and 1 draw. They were beginning to look like the New Invincibles, but a recent defeat at Spurs, draws against Everton and Southampton, defeat by arch rivals Manchester United in the League Cup and being soundly beaten 4-0 by Barca at the Nou Camp saw the Citizens stuttering. This game then, could have gone one of two ways: either the Baggies could capitalize on City''s recent poor form, or City would be the mad bull, and if anyone got in their way they''d best watch out. Sadly for West Brom it was the latter. Within half an hour City were 2 Sergio Aguerro goals in front. The first, a close range effort, the second a beautifully curled shot from the edge of the area which flew past Ben Foster into the top right hand corner. Classy stuff. After that it became a bit farcical: arguments between keeper and defenders, passes going astray, balls booted up into the air. West Brom were all over the place. The mood on the pitch or in the home stands wasn''t helped when the very vocal City fans started chants of Olé as their classy team played keep ball between themselves. The Baggies fans have seen all this before though and their humour cane to the fore when City eventually lost possession and chants of we''ve got the ball, we''ve got the ball echoed around the Hawthorns. Half time couldn''t come soon enough for the the boys in the stripes or their fans. The second half started more brightly for the Baggies with the introduction of new fan favourite Jonathon Leko. His mazy runs and close ball control caused the City defenders a few problems and certainly brought the home fans to their feet for 15 minutes or so. One to watch, this lad. All hopes were dashed though when Gundogan scored City''s third on 79 minutes and fourth on 90 minutes. By this time the Hawthorns was emptying fast. Even the Smethwick end were on their way. I never seen that before. Ultimately City proved their class and given the money that''s been spent it should be so. West Brom had no answers. More of Leko please. Up The Baggies. End of season 16/17- Manchester City finished 3rd on 78 points and reached the semi-finals of the FA Cup where they were beaten 2-1 by Arsenal.
