GROUND HISTORY adapted from "The Ultimate Directory of English & Scottish Football League Grounds"

This ground at Saltergate was probably first used for football in the 1860s but it was not until 1887 that Chesterfield FC adopted the venue on a permanent basis. Details of the original facilities are not known but by c1900 (during their first period in the Football League) at least a small stand had been constructed on the east side and this had been supplemented by a pavilion by 1914.

The club re-joined the Football League in 1921 but it was not until 1932 that a replacement 2,200 seat main stand opened on the east side and the 1950s before the terracing was concreted and covers installed on the west side and at the south end. By 2000 parts of the ground had become dilapidated and the terracing on the west side was closed for safety reasons. This terracing was replaced by a new 1,200 seat stand in 2002 and both of the ends were re-terraced giving a capacity of 8,504 with 2,674 seats at the start of the 2007/8 season. The pitch size was 112 x 73 yards.
